Saint-André Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country

This beautiful church shaped like a Latin cross was built in the 19th century under Napoleon III. Architects Hippolyte Durand and Hippolyte Guichenné designed it in the neo-Gothic style, very much in vogue at the time. Take a look at its two towers: they were once topped by two 74-metre-high spires which were demolished in 1901 because the soil they were built on was too unstable. You see, the whole district had been built on marshland. They were replaced a few years later by the two belfry towers you see today. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful pipe organ donated by Napoleon III himself; it’s listed as a historical monument. You can also admire paintings by famous local artists like Léon Bonnat, whose works are on display in the city’s art museum that bears his name.
