Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country

You’re now approaching Port Neuf Street, one of Bayonne’s busiest shopping streets. You can spot the cathedral’s spires in the distance, peeking out between the two rows of colorful Basque houses lining the street. You’re at the heart of the city’s historic center, where you’ll find plenty of little shops of all kinds. It’s just perfect for a leisurely stroll or a shopping spree! Fun fact: Port Neuf Street used to be a canal, which explains why the houses here are built on stilts. This bustling, narrow street has kept its old-world charm over the centuries, lined with beautiful medieval arcades on either side. We’ll only be seeing a small part of it today, but feel free to come back later to explore it for yourself. You’re sure to find some great souvenirs to take back home! And if you’re a chocolate lover, you’re definitely in the right place. Sure, everyone’s heard of Gâteau Basque, Bayonne ham or Espelette pepper, but did you know that the Basque Country is also famous for its chocolate? They’ve been producing their own chocolate for over 5 centuries! In fact, Bayonne was nicknamed the “City of Chocolate” in the 1700s, when word of this confection spread. Its chocolate was so good, it became a hot ticket item exported all the way to Paris. It was Jewish refugees from Spain and Portugal who brought with them the recipe for chocolate-making to Bayonne back in the 1600s. At the time, it was not the solid treat we all know, but a drink made from cocoa beans, flavored with vanilla, cloves, cinnamon or even pepper. Over time, industrialists gradually set up shop in the city, putting their money into this flourishing trade. Today, Bayonne’s chocolatiers carry on the tradition, creating both classic and innovative chocolate delights. You absolutely must try some!
