Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country

Every summer, Bayonne comes alive hosting one of France’s biggest and most beloved events: the Fêtes de Bayonne, or Baionako Bestak in Basque. Inspired by the famous Festival of San Fermín in Spain, this legendary festival was first celebrated in 1932 by a group of rugby players from the local union club, the Aviron Bayonnais. With over 1.3 million attendees each year, the Fêtes de Bayonne is one of France’s biggest events. For five days, the city pulsates with energy, attracting locals and visitors from all over France. Once known as the Grandes Fêtes d’été (Great Summer Festivals), the Fêtes de Bayonne have grown in popularity, attracting more and more people every year. Ever since 1947, the festivities kick off with the ceremonial throwing of the city keys by famous athletes and musicians. This always takes place at 10 PM on the Wednesday preceding the first weekend of August. Then there are the daily tributes to King Leon, the festival’s mascot – a ritual dating back to 1987. He’s placed on the Town Hall balcony and every day at noon, crowds gather below to listen to the 12 chimes of the bells ringing in his honor. The mascot is removed on Sunday evening during the closing ceremony, which marks the end of the festivities with a fireworks display. From parades and traditional sports and games to electrifying music and thrilling races and bullfights, there’s something for everyone. And how could we forget the dress code? Locals and visitors alike sport the iconic white shirt and red scarf – a tribute to the long-standing traditions of the Basque Country! And remember, this isn’t just any feria; it’s the Fêtes de Bayonne! It’s a must-see event if you ever find yourself in France during the summer.
