Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country

On your right, you’ll find the Basque and Bayonne History Museum. It’s housed in the Dagourette Mansion, built in the 17th century. Named after a Bayonne merchant who lived in the area at the time, this former warehouse was transformed into an elegant bourgeois residence. It later became a convent, and then a hospital during the 18th century. In 1924, the building was completely renovated to become the Basque Museum. Here, you’ll learn absolutely everything there is to know about the Basque culture. Its three floors and 20 rooms house the largest ethnographic collection dedicated to the Basque Country. You’ll find collectibles and works of art, mostly from the 20th century, charting the origins, architecture, festivals, history and crafts of the region, all while offering a glimpse into the daily lives of its inhabitants. And all this within the walls of a building that was listed as a historical monument in 1991, and is now a testament to Bayonne’s rich architectural heritage.
