Botanical Gardens

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country
Here you are in front of the entrance to the Bayonne Botanical Gardens. This hilltop park actually sits atop the bastion of Vauban’s fortifications, where cows once grazed in the moat. Raised some seven meters above ground, you’ll discover a beautiful Japanese-style garden, perfect for a moment of relaxation. You’ll find water basins, waterfalls, bridges and pathways, and of course an array of trees, plants and flowers so diverse, they will take you on a journey around the world. You’ll get to see bamboos, Japanese maple trees, banana trees, cycads, geraniums and Mexican sage. But what really sets this garden apart is that its plants are not grouped by family, as in most botanical gardens, but by color and scent. Fascinating, right? In the central pond, you’ll see Chinese koi fish and red-eared sliders, along with a host of birds, insects and lizards. The park first opened its doors in 1990 and it’s the perfect spot for a tranquil getaway. Plus, you’ll get to do that all while discovering plants from all corners of the globe. And the best part? It’s completely free! Inside the park, you’ll also find a building housing a permanent exhibition on the upkeep of the site and ecology. And an insider tip: don’t miss the stunning views of the cathedral while walking the garden paths!
