Bayonne’s covered market and Moulis Mansion

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Bayonne, Off to explore the Basque Country
Bayonne’s covered market is an absolute must-visit. How can you resist? The city may be famous for its festival and rich history, but it’s also a foodie’s paradise! Where do I start? Bayonne ham, gâteau basque, Espelette pepper, piperade, Basque-style chicken… Your mouth is watering already, isn’t it? For over 150 years, this lively market has been serving up the best of Bayonne and Basque specialties. It’s truly a feast for the senses! So, what will it be: ham, chocolate or cheese? Which one will win you over? Once you’ve browsed all the stalls, I suggest you make your way over to the impressive building across the street. It’s without doubt the most beautiful half-timbered house in town! Originally built around the late 16th or early 17th century, it’s a fine example of Renaissance-era Basque architecture. Its striking red and bright yellow ochre façade can’t go unnoticed. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but we do know that it has only been home to four families. Among them was the Moulis family, after which it was named. Today, this emblematic landmark, just a stone’s throw from the banks of the Nive River, stands as a remarkable testament to the region’s architectural heritage.
