Saint John the Baptist Church
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bastia, The Pearl of the Island of Beauty
You’re now standing in front of the largest church in Corsica: Saint John the Baptist Church. You may have already spotted its twin towers from the Old Port, which rise above the rooftops and boats, making it one of Bastia’s most iconic landmarks.
Built in the 17th century in the baroque style, it replaced an earlier church that once stood right here. Construction took about thirty years, with the main structure completed in 1666. The bell towers and the striking façade were added later, in the 19th century, giving the church its distinctive profile.
Step inside, and you’ll find a truly impressive interior, filled with ornate detail and rich artwork. There are marble statues, including one of Saint John the Baptist, as well as frescoes from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The vaulted ceiling was redecorated in 1870 by two Florentine painters, and the organ, built in 1742 by Bastia native Giovanbattista Terrigo, still stands proudly above the entrance.
The high altar, crafted in 1694 by Honoré Pellé, is another highlight not to be missed. The entrance to the church is just around the corner on Rue Saint-Jean, the next street on your right.
If the doors are open, be sure to step inside and take a moment to admire the craftsmanship. After all, this isn’t just the most important church in Bastia, it’s also been listed as a Historic Monument since the year 2000.
