Romieu Garden
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bastia, The Pearl of the Island of Beauty
To your right is the entrance to Romieu Garden, which shares its name with the staircase just below, which leads up to it.
Designed in the 19th century by architect Paul-Augustin Viale, the same man behind the Romieu Staircase, this peaceful garden offers a green and tranquil escape high above Bastia. Winding paths lead you through a landscape of pine and palm trees, featuring statues, fountains, and ornamental vases scattered throughout.
It’s one of the few urban gardens in Corsica, created to show that despite Bastia’s modest size, the city had everything it needed to appeal to its residents and visitors.
The garden is named in honour of Mr Romieu, whose generous donation helped fund its creation, including the elegant railings that line the staircase. A romantic and restful spot, it’s definitely worth taking a stroll through.
Enjoy the sweeping views over the port and the city below. If you’re here in the height of summer, you might even catch an open-air concert in the garden later this evening.
