Municipal Theatre
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bastia, The Pearl of the Island of Beauty
On your left, along Campinchi Street, you’ll see the municipal theatre. You can walk up the steps to get a closer look at its façade, which overlooks Theatre Square.
Built in 1879, the theatre sits on an 8,000-square-metre plot in the heart of Bastia. It’s home to the largest Italian-style auditorium in Corsica, with room for 800 people during the many performances hosted here.
After standing empty for years, it reopened in 1981 and has since become one of Bastia’s key cultural landmarks. The theatre hosts a wide range of events, such as live performances, film screenings, exhibitions, talks, and more. It also includes a conference hall that can hold up to 200 people.
That said, you’ll have to wait a bit longer before stepping inside this iconic venue of Corsican culture, as it’s currently closed for renovation, with work expected to continue until at least 2027.
