Market Square
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bastia, The Pearl of the Island of Beauty
Welcome to Market Square! Once known as Town Hall Square, this lively spot has been the beating heart of Bastia’s weekend market scene since 1880.
Every Saturday and Sunday, locals and visitors gather here to shop, chat, and soak up the bustling atmosphere.
It’s the perfect place to discover the rich flavours of Corsican cuisine, and you’ll be spoiled for choice! From cured meats and fresh sardines to denti, a prized Mediterranean fish, and tangy sheep’s cheese from the region, there’s something here for everyone.
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, be sure to try the panzarotti or the fiadoni, two beloved local pastries. This colourful, fragrant square wasn’t always a marketplace.
It once housed the Town Hall, and even a theatre that was demolished in 1881 to open up the space. While the city’s administrative offices have since moved to Place Saint-Nicolas, the original Town Hall building is still standing just to your right.
Next to it is the Suzzoni House, built in 1839. It originally featured shops on the ground floor, with the merchants living above on the first floor, a typical setup in 19th-century Bastia. Today, Market Square remains one of the city’s most vibrant gathering places, where tradition and daily life come together in the most delicious way.
