Bastia’s Courthouse
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bastia, The Pearl of the Island of Beauty
At the end of the street on your left, you’ll see Bastia’s courthouse. Its foundation stone was laid in 1852, after the city’s magistrates called for a building worthy of their profession.
After six years of construction, it was officially opened in 1858, with many of Bastia’s leading figures in attendance. But on April 21st, 1932, tragedy struck. The roof collapsed during a court session, claiming 17 lives and injuring many others, including lawyers, police officers, and the accused.
The exact cause of the collapse was never fully determined, and the event left a deep mark on the city’s collective memory. Today, the building has been restored and still serves as Bastia’s main courthouse.
