Church of Sant Francesc de Sales

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Barcelone, Through Gaudí’s eyes
On your left, you’ll see the Church of Sant Francesc de Sales, peacefully nestled along the tree-lined Passeig de Sant Joan. With its distinctive bell tower rising from the façade, it’s considered one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Barcelona. The church was built between 1878 and 1885 for the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. When the convent was later abandoned, the building was converted — first into a religious school, and eventually into a parish church. It’s also the most important work of architect Joan Martorell i Montells, a major Catalan figure of the early 19th century. At first, he embraced the Gothic revival, heavily influenced by Viollet-le-Duc, the French architect known for restoring medieval landmarks. But over time, Martorell developed his own style, blending different influences — and soon became a mentor to some of the biggest names in Catalan Modernism, including Lluís Domènech i Montaner… and of course, a young Antoni Gaudí.
Sure, the Sagrada Família may steal the spotlight, but this church is undeniably part of Barcelona’s architectural heritage. And best of all? Entrance is free. Step inside to enjoy a peaceful moment and take in the beautiful stained-glass windows.
