Welcome to Plaça del Pi. In front of you is the basilica bearing the same name. The Santa Maria del Pi Basilica has an austere appearance, a massive façade and a single rose window. This gothic building dates back to 1319 – but the Church of Pi is documented as early as the year 987. Legend claims that a chapel already stood here in the 5th century, with a neighbourhood established around it. The Santa Maria del Pi Basilica was the heart of one of Barcelona’s earliest suburbs. Formerly outside the city walls, it now stands at the centre ; a testament to how much cities grow and evolve, and with them, their churches. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the Crown of Aragon was at the height of its glory, and Barcelona’s society was thriving thanks to its maritime trade. The Crown of Aragon was a federation of several Mediterranean kingdoms from 1137 to 1716 with Barcelona as its administrative and economic capital. During these two centuries of prosperity , the bourgeoisie upgraded their palaces, and the Church expanded its cathedrals. The rose window here is the largest in all of Catalonia. Destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, a replica of the 14th-century window was recreated by Josep Maria Jujol, Antoni Gaudí’s first assistant. Despite its imposing exterior, the interior’s cross-vaulted ceiling creates a light and open space. Sunlight filters through its magnificent stained-glass windows, four of which are original pieces by a master Catalan Baroque glassmaker. You can also pay to get to the top of the bell tower, for a stunning panoramic view over the city. I’m sure you’ve noticed the single pine tree in the square, nestled among the orange trees. It may be hard to believe, but this part of the Gothic Quarter was once a pine forest—and the tree you see is the last one standing. Every weekend, around forty painters exhibit their work around the square – be sure to take a look around!
