La Boqueria

04 la boqueria poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Barcelone, La belle catalane

Step through the colourful glass and metal entrance in front of you to discover the enchanting La Boqueria market! This is one of the largest covered markets in Europe, with over 300 stalls of local and exotic products, spread across over 2,500 square meters. Centuries ago, this site was outside the city walls, so the taxes were much lower. Local merchants, farmers, and travelling vendors took advantage of this, and have used the square ever since! According to historical records, meat stalls were set up here in 1217! By 1827, there were already 200 stalls, including 100 dedicated to fresh and salted meat, primarily goat meat. Some believe that the neighbourhood’s name comes from this tradition, as “goat meat” is called boc in Old Catalan. In 1836, a revolt led to the burning of the nearby Saint Joseph’s Convent. After its remains were demolished, a large square was built in its place. The market was temporarily relocated to this square, but what was meant to be a temporary solution became permanent. This square has been home to La Boqueria, officially called Mercat Sant Josep, for two centuries. The market building was fully completed in 1853, with the addition of the iconic glass and steel roof in 1914. Today, this space is as rich in history as it is in variety—with stalls offering everything from fruit, sweets, cured meats, to cheeses, spices, pastries, fish, shellfish, and seafood. The flavours and colours are endless. Many stalls encourage you to slow down, take a seat, and savour the experience. So don’t wait—step into Barcelona’s heart of gastronomy! If there are too many people, consider coming early in the morning, when much of the city is still asleep.
