This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bangkok, City of Angels

You’re now in Saranrom Park, a nineteenth-century royal garden that has become a green oasis for locals and visitors alike. With its shaded paths, ponds, and tropical trees, it’s a refreshing pause right in the middle of Bangkok’s historic quarter. And while we’re enjoying this break, let me share three surprising facts about the city. First, did you know the Thai capital holds the world record for the longest city name? Officially, it runs to 169 characters. In English, it translates as: “The great city of the immortals, the magnificent city of the nine jewels, the seat of the king, the city of royal palaces, the home of incarnate gods, created by Vishvakarman at the command of Indra.” Quite a mouthful! Luckily, everyone shortens it to Krung Thep, meaning “City of Angels.” Second, Bangkok is the birthplace of the original energy drink that supposedly “gives you wings.” Back in 1976, a local entrepreneur created Krating Daeng. You can still find it today in its little brown glass bottle, sold right alongside the Red Bull known around the world. And finally, here’s a fun challenge: every Thai coin features a different temple, and all of them can be found right here in Bangkok. With a bit of planning, you could actually see them all in a single day—a real-life treasure hunt across some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Three facts, three reasons why Bangkok never stops surprising.
