It may seem impossible to escape Bangkok’s hustle and bustle, yet here, 8 hectares of total silence stretch out before you… Welcome to Wat Pho, nestled in the heart of the city. Built from a previous temple in the 18th century, it was majorly expanded and restored under the reigns of Rama I and Rama III. It’s one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Thailand, best known for its Buddha representations. The most iconic of its thousand statues is the Reclining Buddha, who is lying on his deathbed, waiting to enter nirvana, covered in gold leaves, and the soles of his feet are inlaid with mother-of-pearl. The statue is striking in size—15 metres high and 43 metres long, making this the largest depiction of a reclining Buddha. Beyond religious tourism, Wat Pho is also known for its medical reputation. Since 1962, it has housed the National Centre for the Teaching and Preservation of Thai medicine, dedicated to the renowned Thai massage. You can even treat yourself to a massage here if the waiting list isn’t too long. Go ahead and explore, you’re in for a memorable visit through Wat Pho’s serene and mystical atmosphere.
