If you couldn’t already tell from its beautiful and elegant temples, Thailand is a country full of art… Every object and every place has intricate details and vibrant colours, highlighting their unique beauty. If you need more proof, head to the pastel yellow building in front of you, hidden behind the palm trees. This is the Bangkok National Gallery, a national monument. Housed in the former Royal Mint building, the gallery officially opened in 1977. The Department of Fine Arts created this space to store and exhibit works by Thai and international artists. It’s also a research centre for traditional and contemporary Thai art. The gallery is spread across two floors, taking every visitor through different eras and styles of Thai art. You’ll find both ancient and modern works within its walls. There’s also an entire section dedicated to the royal family, with treasures that once belonged to Kings Rama VI and Rama IX. In case you need another reason to head inside, know that from February to June, the gallery hosts “art markets” every weekend, where artists sell their creative works.
