This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Bangkok, A spiritual reawakening and more…
Although it’s only 410 metres long, Khao San Road is one of Bangkok’s liveliest and most famous streets. Built in 1892, this street started as one of the city’s main rice markets, and its name still pays tribute to its origins… Khao San translates to “milled rice”. It’s surrounded by major tourist attractions, so in the 1980s, the city decided to redesign the street, becoming a landmark for backpackers, and later renowned for its role in the film “The Beach”. This cult movie was released in 2000, starring Leonardo DiCaprio — Titanic’s heartthrob. In the daytime, Khao San Road’s many bars and cafés keep the street alive. By night, it kicks into high gear, becoming one of Bangkok’s busiest nightlife spots.
