Salt granary

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Avignon, On y danse, on y danse !
As you step through the Porte de la Ligne, aka Line Gate, and into the city, you’ll come across one of the town’s oldest buildings, just to your left. It’s the former salt granary, originally built in the 14th century and still sporting a Louis XV architectural style. It’s been destroyed and rebuilt several times, but the current structure dates back to 1758, designed by architect Jean-Ange Brun. As its name suggests, it was once used to store salt, a prized good at the time. It was listed as a historical monument in 1984, and later restored by Jean-Michel Wilmotte in 1989. In 2018, it opened its doors as a vibrant cultural center, a space where art and innovation come together. Its varied cultural events seek to bring together art, science and technology, sparking discussions about the future. If all this sounds interesting, be sure to check out their schedule for upcoming performances, exhibitions, workshops and gatherings. You won’t be disappointed!
