Saint-Agricol Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Avignon, On y danse, on y danse !
Come and enter this beautiful 14th-century church, the only one of its kind with side aisles. It was built on the site of an even earlier religious edifice, thought to have been constructed in the 7th century by Saint Agricol, bishop of Avignon, and then destroyed by the Saracens. It was Pope John XXII who expanded it and made it a collegiate church in 1321. That’s how this fine Gothic edifice came to be. The square bell tower was only added in 1537, and the beautiful romantic organ came even later, in 1862. Inside, you’ll find tombs, epitaphs, the works of great painters and the relics of Saint Agricol, patron saint of the city. Just behind the church, you can see some remnants of the old medieval city walls.
