Chapel of the Black Penitents and Prison

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Avignon, On y danse, on y danse !
Right before you is the beautiful Baroque façade of the Chapel of the Black Penitents, once home to one of Avignon’s major brotherhoods. Together with the Grey Penitents, they were the sole survivors of the French Revolution. Interestingly, this chapel is the only one in the city that hasn’t been altered over the centuries, while others were either destroyed or remodeled. Right next door is Avignon’s former prison, the Saint-Anne Prison, which housed 160 cells and held prisoners from 1871 to 2003. It was abandoned once the inmates were transferred to the remand center in Pontet. Over the past few years, there’s been a redevelopment project underway to breathe new life into this unused site and transform it into a vibrant hub with shops, restaurants, and homes.
