Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms

Behold another of Avignon’s gems: the Cathedral of Our Lady of Doms. It was built on the Rocher des Doms, the city’s rocky outcrop, back in the 12th century. It boasts a charming Provençal Romanesque style, and it was expanded throughout the 14th and 17th centuries. Standing tall with its impressive spire, the cathedral overlooks the entire city and can be seen from afar, as a true testament to the grandeur of the City of Popes. In fact, it was built on the site of an earlier church dating back to the 4th century. It was completed in 1150, and it’s the oldest building on the square. It’s undergone several restorations over the centuries, resulting in a fascinating mix of architectural styles. Step inside and marvel at the Romanesque porch and nave, the Gothic chapels, and the Baroque touches on the apse and balconies. With its beautiful porch, strongly influenced by classical architecture, its awe-inspiring 4-ton gilded statue of Virgin Mary, and its overall architecture, the cathedral is a true masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque art. No wonder it’s listed as a historical monument! Its interior is also well worth a visit, housing the tombs of the popes who once lived in Avignon, as well as a number of artworks you simply cannot miss.
