Viewpoint of the Cathedral
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Auxerre, In the Footsteps of Cadet Roussel
From here, you get a stunning view of part of the cathedral, especially its impressive tower. Rising 68 meters above Auxerre, this tower is the cathedral’s most distinctive feature. It’s actually the cathedral’s only tower, even though most cathedrals have two. However, this wasn’t by design.
A second identical tower was originally planned, but its construction was halted in the 16th century due to a lack of funds. It was never completed, and the project was eventually abandoned. This gives the cathedral its unique appearance, which we’ll get a closer look at when we reach the front façade.
In the meantime, feel free to snap some photos of this historic monument and its unique tower, which is almost the same height as the tower of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris.
