From the Paul Bert Bridge, you’ll enjoy one of the most iconic views of Auxerre. The city’s monuments line the banks of the Yonne River, with boats docked along the quays.
To your left, rises the impressive Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a symbol of the city, and and directly ahead, the Saint-Jean Tower pierces the sky with its octagonal spire,just beside the Saint-Germain Abbey, located to its right.

Born in Auxerre, Paul Bert was a renowned physician, physiologist, and politician, best known as one of the founders of France’s free, secular, and compulsory education system in the 1880s.
The statue of this renowned figure, one of the most famous of his time, stands proudly in front of the city’s grandest monuments, right here in his birthplace, Auxerre.
