This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Auckland, The City of Sails

In front of you is the beautiful St. Patrick’s Cathedral. As you may have guessed, it is dedicated to St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland! Built just one year after Auckland was founded, in 1841, by Jean-Baptiste Pompallier, a French missionary who played a major role in spreading Catholic evangelism to Oceania. Just a simple wooden chapel to begin with, it gradually expanded over the years. In 1907, it took on its current neo-Gothic appearance, accommodating over 3,000 worshippers. This expansion mirrored the rapid growth of the city’s population, surging from 2,000 in 1840 to over 25,000 by the 1910s. However, it wasn’t consecrated until 1963, when the loans for its construction were fully repaid. Restored in 2007, it is a cherished part of Auckland’s heritage and is officially recognised as a Historic Monument.
