Queen Street

Queen Street is one of the main streets in downtown Auckland, even in the whole city. It was named after Queen Victoria, who reigned over the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901. Yes, 63 years on the throne—almost as long as Queen Elizabeth II! A defining monarch of what we now call the Victorian era, she annexed New Zealand in 1840. Queen Street was established at the same time as the city of Auckland, created after its integration into the United Kingdom. It has always been an important part of the city. In Māori times, a stream ran through this area, providing water and food to nearby settlers. Today, Queen Street is an iconic part of Auckland, one of the busiest shopping streets in the city, and has seen countless political demonstrations and cultural events.
