Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Auckland, The City of Sails
Go ahead and admire this imposing building on Queen Street. This is the Civic Theatre, a huge complex made up of a performance venue and a gigantic “atmospheric” cinema. This term refers to cinemas that make viewers feel like they are outdoors, as lighting and interior design create the illusion of an open sky complete with twinkling stars. This design became particularly popular from the 1920s onwards. The Civic Theatre is inspired by Indian architecture and its atmospheric auditorium is the largest in Australasia—a region that includes Australia, New Zealand, and several Pacific islands. Built in 1929 by Thomas O’Brien, it is now one of the city’s major cultural landmarks. However, upon its opening, the Great Depression’s economic turmoil led to its financial downfall. The theatre was abandoned for many years before undergoing extensive renovations in the 1990s to restore its original function and grandeur.
