Kerameikos

30 kerameikos athenes poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Athens, At the roots of western civilization

Next, we’ll take a right onto Adrianou Street. Should you continue straight ahead, however, you will find yourself in the Kerameikos district. The name itself gives it away: you see, ‘kerameikos’ means ‘ceramic’ in Greek, as this is where the potters once lived and worked, right by the city gates. However strange it may sound, this area is famous today for its cemetery. It’s the biggest necropolis in all of Greece and it dates back to the 11th century BC. They started finding gravestones here in the 1860s, and that’s how this vast archaeological site came to be. For a very small fee, you can visit both the necropolis and its museum, which exhibits all kinds of artifacts found at the site. In the area around the cemetery, you’ll find street art, art galleries and innovative cultural venues.
