Fethiye Mosque

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Athens, At the roots of western civilization
You’re probably wondering why there’s a mosque in Athens’ Roman Agora, an ancient public square. Well, let me tell you that the mosque in question does not date from the same period as the rest of the buildings in this archaeological site. It was built in the 17th century, when Athens was under Ottoman rule. There used to be a Byzantine church on the site, which had been around for centuries. This mosque is just one of the many vestiges of the Ottoman period that greatly impacted the political, economic and social scene of Athens for nearly four centuries, from 1453 to 1830. Today, the building serves as an exhibition hall.
