Church of Saint-Marina

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Athens, At the roots of western civilization
Look to your left and you’ll spot a stunning edifice high up on the hill. This beautiful Byzantine-style church looks nothing like the city’s ancient monuments, as it was only built in 1927. It came to replace an older 11th-century church that was carved into the rock. The current one is dedicated to Saint Marina. Inside you will find wonderful 17th-century frescoes depicting the lives of various Saints, as well as a beautiful wooden iconostasis. Designed by the architect Achilleas Georgiadis, the church boasts four aisles and an impressive dome. It’s easily one of the most important sights in Thissio, one of the most popular neighborhoods in Athens. It is said that the church that once stood here did wonders for pregnant women; apparently, those who came to pray had quick and easy deliveries. It thus drew crowds of worshippers, just like the current church. Be sure to check it out! It’s definitely worth the detour.
