This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Athens, At the roots of western civilization

This church dates all the way back to the 11th century and seems to have been expanded during the 13th century. Its name’s a bit of a mystery – some say it’s named after its architect, while others think that the word has something to do with the “Kapnikaris”, the collector of the tobacco tax back in Byzantine times. The church was built in the 19th century and they almost tore it down at some point to widen Ermou Street! You see, it’s built right in the middle of it. Yet it was saved thanks to its history and architecture, not to mention its unparalleled charm. Today, it’s one of the most important monuments of the Byzantine era! Inside you will find beautifully preserved frescoes and mosaics. It’s definitely worth a peek!
