Church of Notre-Dame de la Major

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Arles, 2000 years of history
See the small church perched atop the hill? It’s Notre-Dame de la Major. Believe it or not, it stands on the ruins of an old Roman temple. The church was originally built in the 12th-century Romanesque style, but has undergone many alterations over the years. It’s one of the oldest churches in Arles. If you happen to be here on May 1st, don’t miss the grand finale of the Fête des Gardians parade. The herdsmen and their horses are blessed during a Provençal mass inside the church. This is the seat of their brotherhood, dedicated to Saint George, the patron saint of horsemen. Fun fact: the herdsmen are the ones who watch over the semi-wild bull herds that roam the Camargue region. They formed their brotherhood back in 1512! Every year, after the May 1st Mass, they elect a new captain. Let’s not forget that every three years, the people of Arles also elect a new Queen! After all that, the city comes alive with a big show where the horsemen show off their legendary skills! I know, you’re probably bummed you’re not here on May 1st. Well, you’ll have to come back.
