Saint-Bernardin Chapel

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Antibes, Let’s head to the French Riviera
Look to your right to the building sitting on the corner with Rue Paul Martelli. This neo-Gothic chapel is part of Antibes’ historic heritage. Although recently restored, it was built on ancient Roman foundations, suggesting that this site was already a place of worship in Antiquity. In the 16th century, the Brotherhood of the White Penitents of Saint Bernardin decided to build a chapel here. Only the solid walnut side door has survived since 1581. After a fire in the late 20th century, it was carefully restored and reopened to the public. Inside, you’ll find colorful statues of Saint James, Saint Sebastian, and of course Saint Bernardin, along with 16th-century frescoes and a painted ceiling that resembles a starry sky. Don’t hesitate to step inside! But first, look up above the door—you’ll spot a dragon with piercing eyes, actually a representation of Lucifer. The chapel has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1989 and underwent major restoration from 1995 to 2008, before reopening to visitors.
