Perrière gate

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Annecy, The Venice of the Alps
You might have noticed that the streets of Annecy are still very typically medieval. The fortified gates are a good example. To protect itself from outside attacks, the town was surrounded by a fortified wall. To enter and leave the town, you had to go through protected passages and pay a tax. Normal. The Perrière gate was the mandatory entrance for travelers coming from Italy, the Little St Bernard Pass or Albertville. Above the door you can see an inlaid fish. This is the coat of arms of the town of Annecy. It is thought that the town adopted the trout as its emblem in the 15th century, in connection with its strong fishing activity from the lake
