Text version

Welcome to Annecy, Jewel of the Alps, Little Venice, Pearl of the Alps… So many nicknames, both flattering and suggestive. Annecy is one of those towns that are a magnet for visitors, and with good reason! A shimmering lake surrounded by mountains, mazes of colourful cobbled streets with a medieval feel, winding canals with a multitude of flower-decked bridges offering views each more beautiful than the last. The icing on the cake is that Annecy is dazzling all year round! Gorgeously adorned in its autumnal colors, the surrounding snow-capped Mountains render it picturesque in winter. The city becomes incredibly colorfoul in spring and shines with a thousand lights in summer where it also becomes a highly sought-after destination for its water activities and nature hikes. It’s up to you to decide which season thrills you the most! Regardless, Annecy will have something in store for you! Today we’re going to take you on a tour of Annecy’s old town to tell you a little more about its history, which is closely linked to that of the Duchy of Savoy. So, let’s set off on a journey of just above 2 kilometres that will take you back through the centuries and on an adventure through Annecy. Let’s get going!

Got Some Extra Time?

Annecy is a city that comes alive with the breathtaking nature that surrounds it.

If you have extra time, don’t hesitate to head towards the lake and enjoy all the activities it has to offer. The beaches of Saint-Jorioz, perfect for families seeking relaxation, are an excellent choice. You can also rent a bike to cycle around and discover its beautiful beaches and the Talloire bay. Veyrier du Lac offers cruises, hiking, and exploration of nearby towns, ideal for nature lovers and those seeking picturesque landscapes. If you still have time, visit the Abbey of Talloires, where you’ll find a stunning 11th-century abbey. The charming villages surrounding Annecy, like Menthon Saint Bernard and Talloires, offer magnificent panoramas and moments of relaxation, especially during bike rides or boat trips.

The Lake

The Lake
Once you’ve explored the old town from top to bottom, head towards the lake and all the activities it has to offer! From boat tours to see it from every angle,

to stand-up paddleboarding or pedal boating for a leisurely time on the water, or cycling around the lake to discover its beautiful beaches and the Talloire bay!

Talloire

One of the must-sees around Annecy is the bay of Talloire. This small village enjoys a privileged position right above the water and facing the mountains. You’ll discover its 11th-century abbey, beautiful access to the lake and a host of luxury hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Menthon-Saint-Bernard castle

Don’t miss a visit to Menthon-Saint-Bernard with its romantic castle. A jewel of Savoyard architecture dating from the 10th century, it was tastefully renovated in the 14th century. Walt Disney is said to have used it as the inspiration for his Sleeping Beauty castle. Although many castles claim this title, the resemblance is striking. The site is open from April to November and offers great views of the mountains.

Annecy’s peaks

You could also go for a walk on the Forclaz Pass or on the peaks of Mont Veyrier! The Alps are even more beautiful from the air! Why not take the plunge and fly over the lake and its surroundings? This is one of the most famous spots in France to go paragliding. Head to the town of Doussard, at the end of Lake Annecy. There are plenty of professionals to choose from, and the memory of soaring over this magnificent view is unforgettable.

Les randonnées

If you prefer to stick to the ground, you’ll be spoilt for choice. You don’t have to go far from Annecy or deep into the Alps, but there are plenty of beautiful walks to choose from. The great classic, and an absolute highlight of the area, is the Col de la Tournette, the highest peak overlooking the lake. It’s not the easiest walk in the world, but it’s well worth the effort. You’ll walk along sublime mountain paths with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding area and often be escorted by ibex. At the top you will be rewarded with stunning views over the Alps and the Mont Blanc. The last part requires ladders, but don’t worry, access is easy and safe.

Departure point : Start from the Prés Rond car park on the Col de l’Aulp.
Route: There are several variations; we recommend ascending via the Varo Pass and completing the loop via Montmin.
Elevation gain: 1300m+
Highest point: 2327m
Duration: 12km – 6 to 7 hours with breaks

Montrottier castle and the Gorges du Fier

Another famous castle in the region is Montrottier. Built between the 13th and 16th centuries, this typically Savoyard fortress is one of the most beautiful in the region. Just 10km from Annecy, the castle houses a fascinating cabinet of curiosities that will take you back in time. Just below the castle you’ll find the Gorges du Fier. Reaching a hight of over 25 metres, this immense gorge, is a magnificent natural show. This exceptional site is easy to discover thank to footbridges going over the water.

The Roc de Chère nature reserve

Between Menthon-Saint-Bernard and Talloire, you’ll find the Roc de Chère nature reserve. This small mountain range, covered with forests and overhanging the water, is a real showcase of protected nature. The reserve has many beautiful walks, ideal for admiring the local flora and fauna.

The mountains

And if you’ve got time to explore Haute-Savoie a little further, you can spend the day in La Clusaz or head to Chamonix to touch the sky from the summit of the Aiguille du Midi. (cf guide des ALPES)
