Ralliement square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Angers, The Green City
This central square, with its bars, restaurants and shops, is visited by thousands of Angevins every day! The square was originally home to three churches. Their demolition in the 18th century allowed the creation of a new square, which quickly became a major gathering place during the Revolution, since it was here that the guillotine was installed and that many death sentences were passed. It was also here that conscripts and soldiers rallied. In 1791, it was renamed Ralliement Square. The theatre and hospice on the square disappeared during the 19th century, allowing the square to be enlarged and renovated. A new theatre was then rebuilt and became one of the city’s main performance venues. Nowadays, a total of 700 seats are available in the Italian-style auditorium of this Grand Theatre, which borders the Ralliement square and stages music, dance, theatre and opera. The name of the square still rings true today, as it is here that the people of Angers gather for a drink, to shop or to take part in one of the many events that take place here, such as the music festival, the Christmas market or the Accroche-Cœurs, a street theatre festival held in the streets of Angers every summer!
