Mail Garden

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Angers, The Green City
This is the heart of the Mail garden, one of the city’s many parks! Did you know that Angers is considered one of the greenest towns in France? In fact, its density of natural spaces is twice the national average. Ideal for walking and cycling! This park is a haven of peace just a stone’s throw from Angers’ town centre. It was laid out in the 17th century and takes its name from an old French sporting game known as jeu de mail, which was widely played in France between the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1859, it became a magnificent formal garden, decorated with beautiful multicoloured flowers that adorn the straight paths and make it an elegant and refined park. The impressive fountain in front of you had already been in place for several years when the new garden was created. It faces the Town Hall, which stands behind you. Although this elegant, spacious building was completely refurbished in 2019, Angers has had a town hall since 1474, when King Louis XI came to the city with his army to conquer it. King René, Duke of Anjou at the time, ceded the territory to him and Guillaume de Cerisay became Governor of Anjou and Mayor of the city. It was at this point that the region definitively became part of the Kingdom of France. Feel free to wander around the garden or simply take a break during your visit and enjoy one of the most enchanting spots in the capital of Anjou!
