Doutre district

Located away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, the Doutre district resembles a small village. It was first established in the 11th century around the Notre Dame de la Charité abbey, and rapidly expanded thanks to its proximity to the River Maine, where fishing, boating and tanning activities flourished. Although it is a more recent development than the old town, it still boasts some remarkable timber-framed houses and mansions built by the nobility of Anjou in the 15th and 16th centuries, who settled here. Nowadays, it’s one of the most pleasant districts in Angers, ideal for strolling through the narrow streets and discovering the different architectural styles that make up this charming setting. The name la Doutre comes from its location on the other side of the river. It’s an ideal place to stroll through the narrow streets and along the quays, where you’ll find many fine buildings, including the Trinity Church and former convents.
