De Waag

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Amsterdam, Along the canals
The picturesque building before you is De Waag. It is famously known as the place where Rembrandt painted his renowned masterpiece, The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp.
This used to be a city gate, part of Amsterdam’s medieval defensive walls. However, once the walls were demolished, the building was repurposed as a weighing house, where merchants came to measure their goods—hence its name, De Waag, meaning “weigh house.” With its medieval architecture, De Waag stands proudly on Nieuwmarkt Square, one of the liveliest places in Amsterdam. The area is buzzing with cafés, bars, and restaurants, and its markets have been around here for many centuries. Here, you’ll find both a farmers’ market and an antique market, perfect for those looking to try out local flavors with a touch of history.
Nieuwmarkt is also one of the city’s most festive spots to celebrate New Year’s Eve, attracting both tourists and locals for a vibrant celebration. In short, this dynamic and historic square has something for everyone!
