King Logis

Take a look to your left. Built at the beginning of the 16th century, this remarkable building served as the official residence of the governors of Picardie for many years. It also hosted some of the era’s most prominent figures, including visiting kings such as Louis XIII and his minister, Cardinal Richelieu, and even Louis XIV as a child—hence its name, “Logis du Roi,” meaning “the King’s Residence.” Later, it was completely abandoned for two centuries. Fortunately, it was listed as a Historic Monument in 1926, which helped save and restore it. Though it was partly damaged during World War II, it was quickly repaired and returned to its former glory. You can still admire its beautiful Flamboyant Gothic architecture, enhanced by its typical red bricks and impressive four-level polygonal tower, although unfortunately, you can’t visit the interior. Right next to it, on its right side, there’s another interesting building: the “Maison du Sagittaire,” which also dates back to the 16th century. Built in 1593 for a cloth merchant, it originally housed a shop. It features a beautiful white-stone Renaissance façade with two large Gothic-style arches. But the building you see today isn’t the original Maison du Sagittaire, which originally stood on a street behind City Hall. It was badly damaged during World War II, so its façade, listed as a Historic Monument, was carefully dismantled and rebuilt stone by stone right here. As you can see, people really go to great lengths to preserve their heritage! The building got its name from two sculptures of Sagittarii (archers), placed above the arches on its façade. Directly facing it, behind you, is the impressive Palais de Justice, built in the 19th century on the site of a former abbey. It’s the very first building in France that was specifically designed to be a courthouse. From here, you can also catch your first glimpses of Amiens’ beautiful cathedral.
