Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days… Those are just a few of the many stories written by Jules Verne—one of the most famous writers of the 19th century. I’m telling you this now because you’re standing right in front of the house where he lived for many years. Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828, spending much of his life in Paris. In 1871, he moved to Amiens to be with his wife, whose family was from the region. In 1882, he settled into this red-brick house on your left, where he wrote some of his most famous works and remained until the end of his life. Verne suffered from diabetes and passed away in this house in 1905. More than 5,000 people attended his funeral, and he was buried at the Madeleine Cemetery in Amiens. Several of his novels were published after his death, and many of his stories have been turned into films and plays. In total, Jules Verne wrote over 70 novels, 17 plays, collections of short stories, essays, poems, even songs. He went on to become one of the most translated authors in the world—right up there with Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. A true French icon we can be proud of! The house you see in front of you, built in the mid-19th century, is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Inside, you’ll find over 700 objects related to Jules Verne, along with original furniture that takes you straight back to the 19th century. There is an entry fee, but it’s a great way to discover more about the man behind the Extraordinary Voyages. And if you’d like to visit his grave, head over to the Madeleine Cemetery—you can even go as part of a guided tour.
