Dewailly Clock

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Amiens, Heart of the Somme Valley
This clock is quite unusual, don’t you think? This intriguing monument is one of Amiens’ iconic landmarks, designed by architect Emile Ricquier—who also created the impressive Cirque Jules Verne. It was actually Mayor Dewailly who, in 1888, commissioned this fascinating clock to allow all the inhabitants of Amiens to keep track of time—and, among other things, avoid missing their trains. But construction took longer than expected—over four years, in fact! It was finally completed in 1896, topped by the symbolic statue sitting at its base. This statue, sculpted by Albert Roze, portrays an almost nude woman symbolizing a spring goddess, affectionately nicknamed “Marie sans chemise”, “Shirtless Marie” by the locals. In fact, this statue is the only original part of the clock that remains today, as the rest of the monument was completely destroyed during World War II. Thankfully, the statue had been moved to safety beforehand. After the war, the clock was rebuilt identically and remains a beloved historical landmark in Amiens, surprising visitors with its unusual appearance.
