Church of the Sacred Heart

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Amiens, Heart of the Somme Valley
The construction of this church was closely linked to the expansion of the nearby railway, which ended up cutting off this part of the city — a neighbourhood known as the Vallée district. It became essential to build a new place of worship so local residents could continue to attend services. The Church of the Sacred Heart was originally meant to be just a small chapel, but thanks to generous donations, it became a full parish church by the end of the 19th century. Built in a Romanesque-Byzantine style, it blends beautifully into the surrounding neighbourhood. Inside, you’ll find a lovely stained-glass window from 1954, statues by the sculptor Albert Roze — who also created the Dewailly Clock statue in the city centre — and painted wooden vaults in the nave and side aisles. With its red and white brickwork, the church has a quiet elegance and is the work of Amiens-born architect Edmond Douillet.
