Monument to Canalejas

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Alicante, The City of Sunshine
At the end of the promenade, you’ll spot a square marking the entrance to a park. The square, the monument, and the park are all named after José Canalejas, a Spanish politician active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He served as a minister, Speaker of the Congress, and Member of Parliament, before being assassinated in Madrid in 1912. He now rests in the Pantheon of Illustrious Men, alongside other major figures in Spanish history, in Madrid’s Retiro district. The square opens out onto Canalejas Park, guarded by stone sculptures of lions and dogs. The park is best known for its towering ficus trees, which can reach heights of up to 20 metres. If you’re up for it, take a wander through. It’s a peaceful spot and a nice way to wrap up your walk.
