Republic Square

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Albufeira, The Saint-Tropez of Portugal
Republic Square is one of Albufeira’s main squares. It’s surrounded by beautiful whitewashed houses, typical of the Algarve, the Municipal Archaeological Museum, and the remains of two homes built in the 12th and 13th centuries, during the Islamic period. Back then, this site was home to a military castle, built to watch over the ocean and defend the city from attack. Today, Republic Square stands at the heart of Albufeira. It showcases the town’s architecture and its layered past, taking us eight centuries back, to when the region was under Moorish rule. A square full of history, significance, and character, it’s one you won’t want to miss!
