You’re standing in front of one of France’s most prestigious casinos: the Grand Cercle of Aix-les-Bains. Behind this elegant façade lies a fascinating story that takes us back to the golden age of European spa culture. Picture this: in 1850, King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy personally inaugurated the casino, aiming to make Aix-les-Bains a luxury destination. At the time, Savoy wasn’t yet part of France, but the town was already drawing European aristocracy seeking relief from rheumatism in its thermal waters known since Roman times.

The building you see today is the result of major renovations between 1880 and 1882 by architect Abel Boudier, who designed a monumental façade facing the gardens, complete with three grand staircases, a bold neoclassical style, and all the hallmarks of Belle Époque refinement. A few years later, between 1906 and 1911, two wings were added, housing new salons and galleries in perfect stylistic harmony. Be sure to walk around the building to appreciate every detail. Inside, the casino hides another gem: a magnificent Italian-style theater seating 830, inaugurated in 1899 by architect Henri Eustache.

It replaced an earlier mobile theater that had been set up in the ballroom. This jewel, renowned for its remarkable acoustics, still retains its original machinery, now protected as a historic monument. But the most captivating story is that of Queen Victoria. The British sovereign stayed in Aix-les-Bains three times and was a frequent visitor to this casino. Imagine her, the epitome of Victorian strictness, walking through the plush salons of the Grand Cercle. Her presence helped cement Aix-les-Bains’ reputation as the “Riviera of the Alps,” a title it has never lost. For a true Belle Époque anecdote, know that when the theater first opened, spectators complained about the enormous hats worn by high-society ladies blocking their view.

A special rule had to be introduced to restore some order amid all that elegance. Don’t miss the chance to step inside and admire the mosaic ceilings, stained glass, and marble columns, every inch of this place exudes the grandeur and luxury of a time when gambling, art, and wellness went hand in hand. And if you feel lucky, the Grand Cercle is still open today, with its intimate salons, 222 slot machines, and English roulette tables, continuing the art of entertainment in a truly exceptional setting.
