Mazarin district

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Aix-en-Provence, The city of fountains
The Mazarin district dates back to the 17th century. It’s all thanks to Michel Mazarin, the city’s archbishop and brother of Louis XIV’s prime minister, who dreamt of expanding Aix-en-Provence southwards. So they tore down the old ramparts to make way for the Cours Mirabeau and the Mazarin district, where new residences were built. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, the area was laid out in a grid pattern, as opposed to the historic center with its winding medieval alleyways. After all, they needed wide streets for all the enormous carriages passing through once the aristocrats moved in. You see, they settled here as soon as the district was fully built. That’s why there are so many grand private mansions, all incredibly well-preserved. Yet the district was also home to artisans, shopkeepers and artists, who rubbed shoulders with all those wealthy residents. Today, the Mazarin district is as charming and popular as ever. It’s right in the center of Aix and it’s known for its elegant architecture, museums, and art galleries. Feel free to wander around and explore!
