Carders’ Forum

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Aix-en-Provence, The city of fountains
On your left is the Carders’ Forum, one of the city’s main squares. Feel free to take a little detour to explore it and soak up its pleasant, lively atmosphere. It’s lined with cafés and restaurants, always buzzing with activity. It was laid out in 1963, on the site of an old, run-down neighbourhood. They demolished the houses to make way for it, and they even built a big underground parking lot in the 80s. Soon, restaurants began to pop up, making it the vibrant hub it is today. Fun fact: back in the Middle Ages, this part of town was the Jewish Quarter. As for the name of the square, it has its roots in the old trade of carding; carders would basically untangle and comb wool fibers with the help of a carding machine. Today, the Carders’ Forum is the perfect spot to mingle with the locals, grab a drink or savor one of the local specialties. In 2010, it underwent a major renovation that gave it its present-day layout and transformed it into this popular hangout spot.
