Category: €€/Cultural

Description: The Catedral de Santa María de la Sede is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, so needless to say it’s well worth spending a few euros to see it from top to bottom. Among its most important sites to discover are, of course, the “tomb of Christopher Columbus”, whose remains were transferred to Seville in 1898 in a large bronze coffin; and the Royal Chapel, in honour of King Ferdinand III of Castile, who built the city of Seville in 1248. Not only can you learn more about the city’s history, but you can also admire the various paintings by Spanish painters whose brushstrokes are still famous the world over: these include Goya, Murillo and Luis de Vargas, not to mention Pedro de Campaña. You’ll have the vague impression of being in both a cathedral and a museum of a thousand and one splendours. Located on Avenida de la Constitucion, it is open Monday to Saturday from 10.45am to 6pm, and on Sundays from 2.30pm to 7pm.

Built in the 16th century, this imposing and somewhat intimidating monument gives you some idea of what Seville palace architecture might look like, with beautiful sculptures and a marble interior to accentuate its sovereignty. During your visit, you will pass through the “Patio Central”, which will not leave you indifferent with its arcades and its four corners surrounded by Roman and Greek statues, with a beautiful double-bowl fountain in the middle. Your visit will take you to the rooms on the ground floor, of which the “Pretorio Room” is a firm favourite with visitors: it opens onto a small, cosy and intimate garden, whose distinctive carved wooden coffered ceiling gives it a certain originality that sets it apart from other gardens you may have visited at some point in your life.
