A town of around 54,000 inhabitants in Tuscany, Siena, like its region, is steeped in history. Tuscany is home to some of the world’s greatest artists, including Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. As for Siena, its historic city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As well as being a sublime city, Siena is home to a medieval tradition that takes place twice a year and is well worth a visit. Between culture, gastronomy, art and architecture, Siena deserves more attention.

1- Discover the medieval centre and its cathedral

Description: During a 2-hour walk through the medieval centre of Siena, you will discover the history of its cobbled streets and impressive buildings such as the Palazzo Salimbeni, considered to be one of the oldest banks in the world. The first is the Basilica of San Dominico, built in the 13th century in the district where Catherine of Siena, a leading figure in Italian Catholicism, grew up. 2- Discover the Sienese countryside on horseback

Description: In Siena, it’s not just the medieval centre that’s sublime. Siena, and Tuscany as a whole, is renowned for its rich agricultural heritage. On this tour, which lasts around two hours, you will ride a horse through the vineyards and countryside of Tuscany while your guide tells you about the history of the region and its flora and fauna. The Palio is a horse race between neighbouring districts or towns. This tradition takes place twice a year, both in summer. The first is held on 2 July, in honour of Madonna di Provenzano, a terracotta bust located in the church of Santa Maria di Provenzano, patron saint of the city of Siena. The second race takes place just over a month later, on 16 August, during the feast of the Assumption. Riders ride without saddle or harness. This tradition, which has lasted for decades, attracts thousands of people every year.
